- ➤ A single mother in (Hayden Farms) was fined $150 by her homeowners association after a trash bag blew from an overflowing dumpster. The HOA said she must keep her trash indoors until the bin has room. AZ Family
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Highland Prep's aerial drone team, known as The Crusaders, won the All-Around Champion title at the HPS Fourth Annual Aerial Drone competition and has earned a spot at the upcoming regional championship. The team (Perrin Cole, Patrick Heydenreich, Jayden Saunders and Quentin Bowens) showed strong piloting and coding skills. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new state law that took effect Jan. 1 extends state cancer insurance benefits to retired firefighters and police officers. Eligible retirees have one year to opt in by paying a $185 annual premium (coverage now extends past the previous expiration date based on service) and receive tax-free benefits for cancer-related diagnoses. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Thomas Williams, a longtime donor who enlisted a friend, now urges coworkers to donate during National Blood Donor Month. Vitalant will hold drives on Jan. 3, 5, and 7 at local locations with donors entering a draw to win $500. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The state’s Workplace Heat Safety Task Force recommended new guidelines (cool water, rest breaks, and accessible shade) for outdoor workers, as the Industrial Commission plans public hearings and further reviews to improve safety. ABC15
