- ➤ Eligible Maricopa County families with a child 6 or under who own their home and meet income guidelines can apply for a free pool fence—an initiative by Child Crisis Arizona, SRP, State Farm, and partners that runs until April 5. Applications in English and Spanish are online. ABC15
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Surprise will host the Roots of Creation: Art and Nature Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 at Surprise Xeriscape Garden (16126 N. Civic Center Drive). The event will feature art booths, live music, interactive performers, and free, hands-on activities for all ages. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Imagine Prep Surprise varsity football team was recognized with the Silver Team Scholar Award by the Canyon Athletic Association for academic excellence. They were the only one of 26 programs honored for sustained classroom performance. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Shadow Ridge High School in Surprise will soon welcome three baby owlets as part of its ongoing owl care program. The principal and school resource officer oversee the current great horned owls (Shadow and Ridge) whose activities are shared live online. ABC15
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Surprise Fire-Medical Department is accepting applications for its volunteer fire cadet program that gives adults hands-on fire service training. The department trains 10 people a month (providing career development) for aspiring firefighters. Surprise Independent
