COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Founder’s Day festival will return next month from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28 at Bicentennial Park (16705 N. Nash St.). The city and the Original Town Site Stakeholder Committee will present the free event featuring local musicians, performers, and speakers.  Surprise Independent
  • Veteran Kurt Leichtentritt lost his service dog Lainey early one cold November morning at his Rancho Gabriella home, so he used a new Ring app feature (Search Party for Dogs) to call neighbors for help. Alerts soon showed she was just a block away and she returned home safely.  Surprise Independent
  • Residents are invited to attend a friendly coffee talk at the SCW Foundation Quail-Coyote Room where members share details on joining the world’s largest women's service organization. The event offers coffee + goodies and a chance to meet others.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Surprise students made their colleges' dean's lists for the fall semester. Maggie Wilcox, of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (finance major), and Marcus Logan from Youngstown State University (business administration) achieved the required GPA levels.  Surprise Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • In Surprise, the players’ union is moving ahead with labor talks after union head Tony Clark resigned Tuesday amid findings of personal misconduct; deputy Bruce Meyer (the No. 2 official) said he felt shaken by recent events but added that the focus on resisting a proposed salary cap remains unchanged.  Surprise Independent
  • The Big 12 Conference has released its first postseason baseball tournament schedule at Surprise Stadium from Tuesday, May 19 through Saturday, May 23, featuring 11 games with 12 teams and ticket prices ranging from $130 to $220. Tickets go on sale soon and games will air on ESPN networks.  Surprise Independent
