- ➤ Today, the first Community Collective of 2025 runs from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.—a free event that will explore empowerment of the Down syndrome community. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Launch Team 6352, a nonprofit robotics team from Surprise, clinched the Impact Award at the Arizona East Regional Competition and will travel to Houston for the FIRST Robotics World Championship from April 16 to 19 + the 19 student members from nine Valley schools plan to raise $15,000 for entry fees, travel and robot costs + community donations are encouraged to support their mission. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Surprise residents are invited to share what they love about living in the city and to rate valued services in the 2025 National Community Survey, which will guide future city projects. Three thousand households will receive a postcard with a link to take the survey online starting this week, the paper version arriving on or after March 31, and a citywide online survey opening April 21 — all responses remain anonymous and results will be posted online this summer. - ➤ The Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association received a $40,000 sponsorship check from Valley Toyota Dealers at Toyota of Surprise on March 21 (with general manager Larry Tabloff and ALECA President Tony Sanborn present). Law enforcement representatives from Phoenix, Queen Creek and Scottsdale, including officer Derek Vusovich with his injured K9 Rocco, attended the ceremony to honor police canine teams. - ➤ Surprise City Councilmember Nick Haney held his regular District 1 meeting on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at Asante Library on 16755 W. Vereda Solana Drive—residents from the northwest and northeast parts of Surprise attended the meeting. Surprise Independent
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Phoenix-based TerraWest Communities paid $10 million for a 210-acre lot near 219th Avenue and Sun Valley Parkway in Surprise. The developer plans to rezone the site for 750 to 1,000 homes and 20 to 30 acres for commercial use—expecting rezoning to finish in about a year—before breaking ground and selling lots by late 2026. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Texas Rangers left-hander Cody Bradford has built his career using smart pitching and command—he relies on mixing pitches to succeed despite an average fastball of about 89.8 mph. Bradford, who will open the season on the injured list due to elbow soreness, is one of a few pitchers who count on strategy over sheer speed to compete in the majors. Surprise Independent
