- ➤ Surprise Community Park at 16089 N. Bullard Ave. will host the Water Lantern Festival from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, and guests will enjoy food trucks, music and a lantern design session at 6:30 p.m.—with a lantern launch planned between 7 and 8:30 p.m. while tickets cost $35.99 until April 8, $45.99 from April 9 to 11 and $55.99 on the day. - ➤ Surprise city officials and the Surprise Original Townsite Stakeholder Committee announced Founder's Day to celebrate the city's heritage at Bicentennial Park on Saturday, April 5th from 4:30 to 8 p.m.—the event will feature local musicians, performers, speakers, games and food. Volunteers will help with setup, cleanup and vendor support during two shifts. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The Sun City Early Bird Lions Club will meet on Friday, April 4 at 8:00 a.m. at the Royal Cafe—10793 W Grand Ave—to hold a meeting with a speaker and offer breakfast. There is no cost for the meeting while breakfast can be purchased. Surprise Independent
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Grand Singers and Chorale will perform their spring concert, 'It’s About Time,' with shows — one at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5, and one at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6 — at the Sonoran Plaza Ballroom, 19726 N. Remington Drive; the concert will be directed by Pamela J. Weir and feature accompanists Marilyn Sassman and Ruth Ann Price along with a professional band. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The Surprise-based West Valley Chorale under director Ken Goodenberger announced the winners of its sixth annual Young Singers Competition, naming Autumn Stanley of Boulder Creek High and Hailey Young of Betty H Fairfax High as first-place winners. Stanley will perform at upcoming concerts on April 8 — at American Lutheran Church in Sun City and on April 10 at Shepherd of the Hills UMC in Sun City West. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Dysart Unified School District will host a career fair on Thursday, April 17 from 3 to 6 p.m. at its office at 15802 N. Parkview Place—walk-ins are welcome and candidates may also register in advance for on-site interviews for teaching and other positions. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Summer school registration is open for current Dysart Unified School District students in grades 8 through 11 in Surprise—options include online classes to earn credits and in-person sessions to make up high school core subjects. Students can enroll in up to two classes, and the registration deadline is April 17 for classes starting on April 21 and May 23 for those beginning on May 27 or June 2. Surprise Independent

- ➤ The city of Surprise finished installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Cactus Road and Prasada Parkway; crews will complete lane markings Monday morning and activate the light Monday afternoon—its proximity to Loop 303 means no 48-hour flashing red period will occur—and it will then operate normally.
