- ➤ The city of Surprise will host a butterfly extravaganza for kids on April 16 at Asante Library, 16755 W. Vereda Solana Drive—children will learn about the butterfly life cycle with a story and craft from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Surprise Independent
- ➤ After a dog named Benji was dumped in the West Valley near Perryville Road and Peoria Avenue last month, Surprise police rescued him—ensuring he was vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped. An officer adopted him on Wednesday—adding him as a new part of the department’s family. ABC15
- ➤ Benevilla, a nonprofit dedicated to serving older adults, adults with disabilities and caregivers, named Kristen Wilson as its new chief operating officer. Wilson brings over 20 years of experience in nonprofit financial management and strategic planning—she will work with CEO Joanne Byers to improve financial oversight and program operations. - ➤ The new McDonald’s opened on March 29 at 163rd Avenue and Pat Tillman Boulevard with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor, McDonald’s GM Rosa Godinez Cruz, and local leaders. The event featured entertainment, vintage police car tours, a fire truck display — and grand opening promotions for families. Surprise Independent
- ➤ City and Home Depot officials held a board-cutting ceremony for Surprise's new Home Depot store at 16601 W. Cactus Road — the event replaced a ribbon cutting as General Manager Eric Gomez led the cutting with Mayor Kevin Sartor and a councilmember. The nearly 110,000-square-foot warehouse in Prasada will later add an EoS Fitness and a Fry's grocery store while a $5,000 check was presented to HandsOn Greater Phoenix. Surprise Independent
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Arizona libraries are offering a free Culture Pass to help students and families explore museums and cultural sites statewide—this program supports those from Title I schools who may not afford summer arts programs. The pass is available to anyone with a library card and provides free admission for two people at participating institutions. Surprise Independent
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Surprise Parks and Recreation Department is offering a youth basketball league with sports skills classes+clinics and camps this summer for children ages 5 to 17. Registration ends on Sunday, April 20 and the season starts in late May with games on Saturdays and weeknights+ volunteer-led practices, ensuring plenty of play and learning opportunities.
