- ➤ Haley Helman, a Girl Scout from Surprise, won the Gold Award for her dog agility equipment project and is one of 31 local Scouts recognized for tackling community issues—an honor reserved for Girl Scouts in grades 9 to 12 who lead service projects. Surprise Independent

- ➤ ABC15 Investigators have been nominated for the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for their series 'Policing Phoenix' that turned a 126-page DOJ report on the Phoenix Police Department into video reports—winners will be announced in May. ABC15

- ➤ A 16-year-old Valley teen who was named Time Magazine’s Kid of the Year is pushing Senate Bill 1031 at the Capitol to ban the sale of cosmetics tested on animals. She is working with Senator John Kavanagh and the Animal Defense League of Arizona as the bill moves from the Senate to the House. ABC15
- ➤ Toyota of Surprise will host the first of 10 Mini Public Safety Expos on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 13543 N. Autoshow Ave, where the Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association and Valley Toyota Dealers will let local residents meet police teams, board armored vehicles and see K9 training in action+ Valley Toyota Dealers is now an official 2025 sponsor for ALECA events. - ➤ A House panel advanced a funding bill on Tuesday to cover a $122 million shortfall for the Division of Developmental Disabilities—lawmakers narrowly approved the measure despite calls for changes, leaving services at risk if the extra funding does not arrive by the end of the month. The bill will be debated further on the House floor as the state seeks to avoid a shutdown of the program. ABC15

- ➤ Surprise-based Sun Health has taken full ownership of Freedom Plaza—a first-of-its-kind life plan community in Peoria that offers independent living, assisted living and memory care—for its long-time residents. A ceremony celebrating the change will be held today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 13373 N. Plaza Del Rio Boulevard where community leaders will mark this new chapter. Surprise Independent
