CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities are investigating a body discovered Thursday morning in a Surprise landfill near 195th Avenue and Deer Valley Road — officers are working to identify the decedent and determine the cause of death.  ABC15
  • Police in Surprise are investigating human remains found by a landfill employee at the regional landfill on April 17.  Surprise Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Youth actors in Surprise are adapting The Neverending Story at Actors PLAYground theater from April 24 to April 27—showing evenings at 7 p.m. and two matinees at 2 p.m. while tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The city of Surprise and ARIZONA+WORK Maricopa County will host the inaugural West Valley Registered Apprenticeship and Pre-Apprenticeship Fair on April 30 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Surprise Regional Library, 16089 N. Bullard Ave, where job seekers and employers can explore training programs.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor led a forum on the City Center master plan during the Mayor's Business Roundtable held on April 1 at Arts HQ. The Economic Development Department hosted the meeting which brought together city representatives, stakeholders and business leaders to review progress and plan next steps for mixed-use development and sustainable infrastructure.  Surprise Independent
  • The city of Surprise approved an agreement with the Flood Control District — a step to take over the McMicken Dam and plan a nature park on 3,500 acres. The dam was built over 70 years ago to protect Surprise, El Mirage and nearby county land — the project will turn this historic flood control site into a space for outdoor enjoyment.  Surprise Independent
  • City council members approved buying 40 acres (next to a previous purchase of 30 acres) in northwest Surprise for a new public safety facility, a move that will help improve local services.  Surprise Independent
