COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Surprise Parks and Recreation Department announced the new disc golf course at Asante Community Park located at 16763 W. Vereda Solana Drive+ the Parks Maintenance crew built the nine-hole course with an extra basket for practice. It runs along the park’s mile starting at the Aviator Memorial by the soccer fields+ the course is free for all players.  Surprise Independent
  • Friends of the Surprise Libraries will hold its bi-annual book sale at the Surprise Regional Library from May 10 to 17 — with items available from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays and until 5 p.m. on weekends. The event supports local literacy programs and benefits from volunteer efforts.  Surprise Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • The West Valley Arts Council announced the inaugural Make Music Day West Valley on Saturday, June 21 to feature free live music and interactive events across public spaces. Communities in the West Valley (including Surprise) will host music events in libraries, parks and other local venues as part of this global celebration that began 40 years ago.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Highland Prep class of 2025 earned $12.4 million in scholarships, breaking a school record and showcasing their academic strength — all graduates were accepted into four-year colleges, including the University of Michigan and University of San Diego. The achievement highlights the school's strong STEM focus at its campus on W. Hearn Road.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Surprise Veterans, Disability and Human Services Commission is inviting community nominations for the Surprise Community Legend Awards Program to honor those making a difference in Surprise. Nominations (Individual Legend, Outstanding Youth, Volunteer of the Year, and Organization of the Year) must be submitted online by 5 p.m. on June 27.  Surprise Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bill Daggett, a 79-year-old local artist with Parkinson's, returned to sculpting after a deep brain stimulation surgery reduced his tremors—he had stopped his art due to the disease. His successful procedure has now allowed him to resume creating sculptures that he once loved.  ABC15
