- ➤ Surprise is hosting a National Tennis Month open house on May 3 at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex, 14469 W. Paradise Lane. The free event runs from 7-10 a.m. and includes a facility tour, free tennis and racquetball play, with a special giveaway for the first 100 guests. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Hydrant Hysteria is a local race where water company workers team up to assemble fire hydrants. Today, Surprise’s Desert Blossoms and Desert Distro team, including Amanda Lacey—who practiced alone before the event—will compete, following last year's winning time of 79 seconds. - ➤ A landfill fire that began on Friday, Apr. 24 was contained Sunday near a privately owned landfill at 195th Avenue and Deer Valley Road as agencies and Surprise Fire-Medical crews stopped the blaze from spreading to nearby homes and businesses. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Broadway actress Penny Orloff will perform her solo show 'Songs and Stories from a Not-Quite-Kosher Life' at WHAM Art Center on Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and are available on Eventbrite. Surprise Independent
