- ➤ The Surprise Police identified human remains found on April 17 at a privately-run regional landfill—these were confirmed as those of a 23-year-old Surprise woman. Surprise Independent
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Nationally recognized mixed media artist Cassandra Lockwood from New Mexico will host a Meet the Artist session at Conscious Creations Art Studio — located at 16511 N. Dysart Road, Suite 111 — on Monday, May 5 from 4 to 7 p.m., where refreshments and shenanigans will be served and her original works will be available for sale. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Surprise Public Library System opened preregistration for its Summer Reading Program, asking local readers to log in to the library website and create an account to track reading minutes starting June 1. The program uses a 'Color Our World' theme to offer prizes like art supplies, food coupons from local businesses, LEGO sets, and more+reward entries at weekly drawings and an end-of-summer raffle. - ➤ School Resource Officer Wendy Klarkowski earned the SRO of the Year award for Surprise at a ceremony on April 17 at City Hall. She has served 13 years in the Dysart Unified School District — spending 10 years at Shadow Ridge High School and 3 years at Sonoran Heights Middle School — and has started programs to help students feel safe. - ➤ Arizona legislators have reintroduced Senate Bill 1658 to clarify animal cruelty laws by setting clear standards for providing food, water and shelter—this bill now awaits a third reading in the House before it is sent back to the Senate for a final vote. ABC15
- ➤ Residents who missed the State of the City event in late April at City Hall can now view the 16-minute video online. Mayor Kevin Sartor narrated the video titled "Moving Forward Together" that explains city initiatives & offers photos and resources on the programs discussed. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Arizona utility regulator Nick Myers got into a harsh social media exchange with the sons of Kate Korman, whose mother died last year after her power was cut off for missed utility payments—she was 82. The sons criticized his remarks and pushed to change power shut-off rules in extreme heat, and Myers later apologized for his comments. AZ Family
