- ➤ The White Tanks Mountain Chapter of the DAR wrapped up its chapter year on May 3 in Surprise with a celebration that featured patriotic pin distribution, dessert auctions, and a genealogy presentation by Vice Regent Marilyn Simleness—showing the group's broad achievements. The chapter will start its new year on Sept. 6 at Happy Trails Resort—where a guest speaker will honor Constitution Week. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Rising inflation has forced more than 700 families a day to visit St. Mary’s Food Bank in Surprise, up from less than 200 daily visits three years ago. On Saturday, May 10, mail carriers will run Stamp Out Hunger—a nationwide drive that lets neighbors donate nonperishable food from their driveways to help families in need. Surprise Independent

- ➤ During Teacher Appreciation Week, Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria in Surprise calls on residents to nominate educators who have made a lasting impact on students—eight teachers will be honored with one grand prize of free pizza for a year and a $250 classroom party plus seven honorable mentions receiving a $100 gift card. Nominations are accepted through May 9—winners will be announced on National Pizza Party Day, May 16. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Attorney General Kris Mayes called on the Arizona Corporation Commission to review APS’s decision to cut off power to 82-year-old Kate Korman in Sun City last May, a move that led to her death from heat stress. She said that if the disconnections had been halted three days later, her death might have been avoided & her family has pressed for more action. AZ Family
