COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Providers like the YMCA report about 70 families are waiting for DES state subsidies for summer child care while over 2,500 children remain on waitlists statewide. Parents can also explore options at the Boys and Girls Club and school district day camps — placements that require early registration as fees range from $60 to $100 a week.  ABC15
  • The Willow Canyon High School baseball team visited the Texas Rangers Player Development Complex near Surprise Stadium—interviewing minor league players to learn about professional baseball.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 3, Dysart Unified students in grades 3—8 competed at Willow Canyon High School in their annual Math Challenge where teams from 20 elementary schools solved timed rounds of math problems. Winners were announced for each grade group with Freedom Traditional Academy winning in the third—fourth and seventh—eighth divisions and Canyon Ridge earning the top spot for the fifth—sixth division.  Surprise Independent
  • Three Valley Vista High School students won state championships for digital animation at the Future Business Leaders of America state conference held April 1—3 at the Tucson Convention Center. Their first-place team of Olias Ramirez, Vanna Yaryan and Kai Langub will compete in nationals next month.  Surprise Independent

  • Surprise city officials approved a new cellphone tower on city-owned land to help ease service issues in the northwest—plans for construction will follow to improve coverage once built.  Surprise Independent
