  • Delta Dental of Arizona announced that local resident Steve Lindsey joined as the company's vice president of business development. He will lead efforts to build partnerships with Medicare Advantage payers, Medicaid managed care organizations, and health systems.  Surprise Independent
  • Surprise’s first major furniture store, American Furniture Warehouse, opened on May 10 at 16600 W. Waddell Road when city officials and company leaders gathered for a ribbon cutting — customers chose to round up their purchase amounts for donations to St. Mary’s Food Bank. The company plans to donate up to $5,000 from these contributions.  Surprise Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • The free exhibit 'IMPRINT: Native American Stories' opens with an artist's reception on May 16th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Arts HQ Gallery’s studio at 16126 N. Civic Center Plaza—hosted by the West Valley Arts Council—and it will showcase works by Arizona Native American artists until June 19th with snacks and drinks provided.  Surprise Independent
  • WHAM Art Center announced the return of its Kids Arts and Crafts Summer Camp for children ages 6 to 12 at its studio on N. Dysart Road. The camp will run on June 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 19, and 23 through 25 with morning and afternoon sessions at $10 per class — each camper will receive a complimentary combo meal certificate from Raising Cane’s.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arizona’s three major utilities have applied for a federal grant to explore potential nuclear reactor sites to meet rising electricity demand — the study aims to inform decisions for reactors that may go online by the early 2040s. Lawmakers and critics have raised concerns about uranium risks and water use, and a workshop on nuclear power is scheduled for May 21 — officials say clear details are needed to build trust.  ABC15
  • Surprise City Court Presiding Judge Louis Frank Dominguez and Associate Judge Catherine A. Gaudreau were reappointed for four more years—this decision secures stable leadership for the local court.  Surprise Independent
