COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Surprise resident at The Grand expressed concern about BNSF’s planned 4,320-acre intermodal site in Wittman—he worries that increased truck and train traffic will worsen congestion and noise on U.S. 60 and affect nearly 9,500 nearby homes. The resident urged for clearer public coverage and detailed maps of the project area to help local communities understand the impact.  Surprise Independent
  • The Grand Flag Detail Team will hold a formal Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 26 at the Veterans Monument in The Grand to honor local Korean- and Vietnam-era veterans (inviting community members to attend).  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dysart Unified School District is seeking a trustee for the Employee Benefits Trust to serve a three-year term—residents must apply by May 23 and contact Dysart Business Services at 623-876-7018.  Surprise Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Surprise has permanently switched to a monthly household hazardous waste pickup program after a pilot that began last September proved successful. From February through November, residents may schedule pickups for electronic and other hazardous waste with appointments assigned on a first-come, first-served basis—items must be out by 6 a.m. for collection by 4 p.m.  Surprise Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Surprise-based Benevilla announced it received a $25,000 grant from SCAN Health Plan to boost its Home Services program — the grant will help volunteers provide seniors with in-home support, grocery shopping, rides to appointments, minor repairs, and friendly visits.  Surprise Independent
