- ➤ The Surprise Public Library will host its summer reading kickoff party at the Surprise Regional Library on May 31 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.—attendees should wear clothes to get wet, bring a towel, and enjoy a foam party with other activities while no registration is needed. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Local community leaders are hosting an exclusive meet and greet at Grandview Terrace—attendees can hear each leader share their area of expertise while lunch and dessert are served and guests must RSVP by June 19. Surprise Independent
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Shake Shack will open its seventh Arizona location — the second in the West Valley — on Wednesday, May 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the Village at Prasada shopping center in Surprise, and it will run until midnight daily while employees hand out custom stickers and donate $1 per sandwich sold on opening day to support St. Mary’s Food Bank. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Surprise Police Department is stepping up seat belt checks around Memorial Day—using high-visibility patrols and teaming with the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and local agencies to enforce state seat belt and child safety seat laws from today until Sunday, June 1. - ➤ Arizona DPS will launch the new Turquoise Alert—an AMBER Alert–style system—for missing indigenous persons near the end of June or early July to help prevent tragedies like 14-year-old Emily Pike’s disappearance from Mesa. Nine DPS staff are training on the system and meeting with tribal leaders to strengthen alerts in indigenous communities. ABC15
- ➤ The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a $3.955 billion budget that funds pay raises for the sheriff's office, a new election tabulation center, and a small property tax cut. However, they warned that a dispute with the county recorder over early voting duties may force budget cuts—supervisors will vote on the budget on June 23. ABC15
