- ➤ Oasis Swim Center in Surprise will host a Family Beach Bash on Saturday, June 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.—families will enjoy water play, games, prizes and crafts at the pool. Surprise Independent
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ WHAM Art Center’s exhibition 'The Five C’s of Arizona' opens today at the Surprise gallery on N. Dysart Road and runs through June 28—showing artworks inspired by copper, cattle, cotton, citrus and climate while offering a gallery reception on May 24 from 3 to 5 with a raffle prize from Nothing Bundt Cake. - ➤ A dive-in movie event will be held at Surprise Aquatic Center at 15831 N. Bullard Ave on Saturday, June 7, where Moana 2 will be shown. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the movie begins at about 7:30 p.m. + Concessions will be available for purchase. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, District 1 Councilman Nick Haney said his office is moving ahead with public safety projects such as roadway expansion on 163rd Avenue, improved cell service from a temporary Verizon tower near Fire Station 304, and design work on a new police substation while urging residents to sign up for CPR, water safety, and Stop the Bleed classes at community events at Chef Peter’s at The Chuckwagon. He also noted economic developments at Asante Marketplace and congratulated teacher Abbiegail Schallmo for winning the Tools for Teachers award—showing the city’s ongoing commitment to enhancing local safety and opportunities. - ➤ Surprise administrative offices will be closed Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day and libraries, trash collection, and WeRIDE microtransit will operate on modified schedules. Trash pickup for Surprise customers is postponed until Tuesday, May 27—parks, community pools, and the Tennis and Racquet Center will remain open with adjusted hours. Surprise Independent
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Surprise Highland Prep senior Marcel Pratt won the Division IV 300-meter hurdles state title by setting a new school record of 38.06 seconds and will compete at Nike Nationals in June. He plans to attend Howard University this fall to pursue a master’s degree in architecture — and he will join the track team. Surprise Independent
