- ➤ Mark Coronado Park is scheduled to close for routine maintenance—beginning Monday, May 26 until Friday, June 13—and will reopen on Saturday, June 14 to operate daily from 6 a.m. until dusk. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The city of Surprise is partnering with Vitalant Blood Donation to hold four blood drives through July, with the first drive today at the Surprise Regional Library Program Room from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by events on May 27 at City Hall Community Room, June 27, and July 27 at the library. Community members should book appointments online using Blood Drive Code p1T62 & walk-ins will be accepted. Surprise Independent

- ➤ At Surprise’s WHAM Art Center on May 2, Zoey Hyman—a student at Trivium Preparatory Academy in Goodyear—was named the new youth poet laureate after competing in the West Valley Youth Poet Laureate competition and will serve as a youth poetry ambassador during the 2025—2026 season. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Katie Hobbs signed an executive order on Thursday to protect Arizona workers from extreme heat by directing the Division of Occupational Safety and Health to form a safety task force—composed of industry leaders, worker representatives, and experts—to draft guidelines by year-end. The order continues her efforts to reduce heat-related injuries and workers’ compensation claims. ABC15
- ➤ Surprise and Peoria officials agreed to extend the Jomax route—meeting years of neighborhood calls for another way in and out of northwest areas—and will begin final planning steps soon. Surprise Independent
