COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Dysart Unified School District will offer free summer meals for children 18 and under in June at Valley Vista High School (15550 N. Parkview Place). Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. (served Mondays through Thursdays from June 2 through 26) and all meals must be eaten on site. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On April 29, Dysart Student Broadcasting Live — a program across four high schools — held its annual awards night to honor over 200 live-streamed events and to recognize students with the Excellence, Aspiring, and Academic Letter awards. District leaders and administrators attended the event to celebrate the achievements during the 2024-2025 school year. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Arizona Charter Academy in Surprise announced that full-time School Resource Officer Nick Wylie will be on campus when students return in the fall. He will greet students each morning and serve as a law enforcement officer and mentor to help build a safe school community. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Road improvements on Cactus Road and Cotton Lane will restrict traffic and close parts of Cotton Lane from May 27 to June 30 — with one lane in each direction on Cactus Road and a detour via Loop 303 for local streets. The work will widen Cotton Lane and upgrade a traffic signal at the Cotton Lane intersection while limiting access to nearby areas. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Maricopa County's upcoming budget allocates $34 million for settlement costs from former Sheriff Joe Arpaio's racial-profiling case—bringing total payments to $352 million. Board of Supervisors Chair Tom Galvin and the county attorney support ending federal oversight of the sheriff's office even though critics say it remains not fully compliant with the settlement terms.
