- ➤ The city of Surprise will host a video game truck at Hollyhock Library on Thursday, June 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 15844 N. Hollyhock St.—registration is required and a game coach will be available to help answer questions. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Shadow Ridge High School graduate Mirabelle Yontz was awarded the prestigious Dorrance Scholarship valued at over $100,000—she will use it to study biology and genetics at UA this fall. She also received the Surprise Youth Scholarship and Wildcat Distinction Award after earning a 4.3 GPA with an Honors Diploma and an Arts Seal of Proficiency. Surprise Independent
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ An ASU study published last week found that groundwater use in the Colorado River Basin is rising fast and that without policy changes, wells in rural areas like Wenden will run dry and new digs may cost up to $130,000—only larger farms could afford them. The study also showed that the ground is sinking over time, which might hurt roads and homes if Arizona does not change its water rules—raising big concerns for the future. ABC15

- ➤ Surprise city manager has chosen police Lieutenant Evan Becher—named acting top cop—to lead the department. He will take on this extra role to boost leadership within the force. Surprise Independent
