- ➤ On Monday, June 9th at 6:20 a.m., a train with about 30 cars stopped at the intersection of Dysart & Waddell roads when six tanker cars did not clear the crossing, leaving motorists stranded for over an hour. Local police shifted responsibility between city agencies and BNSF, leaving Wittmann residents concerned about safety and accountability. Surprise Independent
- ➤ A robotics team from Surprise is receiving more accolades for its award-winning season. Surprise Independent
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Food experts warn that tariffs may soon raise prices on imported foods and advise Surprise residents to stock up on non-perishable items like canned goods, instant coffee, and boxed pasta to avoid higher costs. One expert said shoppers should buy local + choose U.S.-made alternatives like avocado oil + check nearby markets for fresh produce as a backup plan. ABC15
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has been accused of politically prosecuting protesters in a new court motion filed by attorneys for a pro-Palestine demonstrator charged after a protest on April 26 at ASU — the motion also asks for a dismissal and evidentiary hearing under the state’s Anti-SLAPP law, and attorneys said the charges resemble a past case that led to a $6 million settlement. - ➤ Surprise neighborhood grant applications will open Monday, June 16th after the city council approved funds to support local projects — proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22nd. The program will help neighborhoods plan events and make community improvements. Surprise Independent
