- ➤ Today, the City of Surprise newsletter encourages residents to enjoy the new Oasis Swim Center with its aquatic activities and a Family Beach Bash on June 21 while reminding everyone to stay safe and hydrated in the heat—further updates include new business openings, free safety classes, hazardous waste pickups and various community meetings. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Surprise campus of Western Maricopa Education Center is accepting students for IT security, law and public safety, and powersports technology programs for the 2025-26 school year — a move to meet growing employer demand in skilled industries. Other West-MEC locations in Glendale, Phoenix, and Buckeye also offer similar career-focused programs. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mayor Kevin Sartor has paused the city’s plan to permanently end the WeRIDE microtransit service in Surprise—scheduled to stop on June 30—so that officials can study whether the service is still needed. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Surprise City Councilmember Johnny V. Melton will hold his regular meeting for District 4 residents at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at the Surprise Senior Center on N. Hollyhock St.—the meeting covers east Surprise including the Original Town Site. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor said April’s State of the City event focused on connecting the community — boosting public safety, transportation and local services. In May, he and the City Council approved the tentative FY2026 Budget with a five-year Capital Improvement Program, and on June 17, they adopted a revised Strategic Plan and Final Budget that go into effect July 1. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Arizona Humane Society warned pet owners in Maricopa County after investigating several heat-related pet deaths, including dogs left in cars in Queen Creek and outside without water or shelter. The organization stressed it is illegal to tether pets when temperatures exceed 100 degrees and urged owners to cool animals showing signs of heat stroke — such as rapid panting and red gums. ABC15
