- ➤ Sandra Sweeney said she is still grieving after her 17-year-old son Evan Clark and his friend were fatally shot on a Mount Ord camping trip after Memorial Day weekend—Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the suspicious incident with no suspect identified. ABC15
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Conscious Creations Art Studio in Surprise announced it will offer summer workshops, classes, and art markets at its studio on 16551 N. Dysart Road. The planned events include mixed-media classes—creative retreats and art markets—to help people explore the healing power of creative arts. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On June 17, the Surprise City Council approved spending $2,000 for overtime funds for a task force officer serving until Sept. 30. The council also accepted a revised memorandum with the Department of Justice and U.S. Marshals Service — which will cover future overtime expenses after a change in funding allocation. - ➤ Higher-than-expected electricity costs forced the city council to transfer more than $250,000 from the contingency fund to cover a shortfall at the Surprise Water Resource Management Department. The budget adjustment, approved on June 17, is expected to maintain reliable service while officials review longer equipment run times—rising temperatures and expanding system demands.
