- ➤ Surprise Regional Library (16089 N. Bullard Ave.) will host a water storytime for all ages on Saturday, June 28 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Attendees should wear clothes that can get wet, bring a towel, and no registration is required. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Mission BBQ opened its first Surprise location in City Center on June 24 at 14487 W. Bell Road where veterans and first responders led a ribbon cutting and flag raising. World War II Staff Sgt. Peter La Rosa was honored—joining co-owner Bill Kraus and local officials—and the debut marked the restaurant’s second location in Arizona. Surprise Independent
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Phoenix meteorologist Justin Hobbs said higher summer heat does not change how often monsoon storms occur but increases the amount of moisture in the air, making storms stronger and raising the risk of heavy rain and flash flooding for local farmers and residents. ABC15
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A local resident wrote a letter criticizing the council for ending the WeRide program and changing RideChoice eligibility for seniors, arguing that a lack of awareness—rather than low interest—leads to low usage. The letter calls for better promotion of these services and a new vote on their future. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Surprise city officials will hold a pre-application meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, June 30 in the Council Overflow Room at City Hall for groups seeking small grants through the Neighborhood Grant Program—funder of local events. - ➤ The Arizona Department of Transportation said drivers in the East Valley and Surprise should allow extra time this weekend due to road closures for bridge work and pavement improvements. Westbound Loop 202 at Santan will shut down at Arizona Avenue from 11:30 p.m. today to 12 p.m. Sunday — and Grand Avenue in Surprise will be narrowed to one lane from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Sunday.
