  • The Phoenix Zoo will return to Surprise this month at the Surprise Resource Center (12425 W. Bell Road) to host a free program for children 5 and under, where they can learn about nature and animal habitats. • Surprise is hosting the Back 2 School Community Fair at the Senior Center on July 19 and families who pre-register can get a free backpack for every school-age child while supplies last. ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Greater Phoenix Economic Council—an inaugural member of the Valley business resource group—has helped Surprise attract companies like the Seattle Tacoma Box Company, RioGlass Solar and IRIS USA over the past 35 years.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona Department of Transportation advised drivers to plan for overnight lane restrictions in northwest Surprise as it works on improvements — at the Loop 303/U.S. 60 and U.S. 60/163rd interchanges. The restrictions narrow lanes on U.S. 60 between 163rd Avenue and Loop 303, on Loop 303 off-ramps, and on 163rd Avenue — and will last tonight through Friday, July 11.  Surprise Independent
  • Surprise has no city bus system even though it calls itself a city, leaving workers, students, and others without an easy way to get to work, school, or the doctor. Local residents and businesses urge city council to set up bus routes that allow a stop within three blocks — a critical step to support daily travel.  Surprise Independent

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Arizona residents can take advantage of special staycation packages at local resorts and hotels that offer discounted room rates plus additional perks for summer getaways. Offers include a 'Stay and Play' discount with up to 40% off (available through Labor Day) along with deals from properties like Caesars Republic Scottsdale and JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort and Spa for a relaxing break close to home.  ABC15
