- ➤ Alfrediriche Viray, a student at Southern Utah University — from Surprise — was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest and most selective college honor society that invites only top students. Membership requires high marks and is offered only to the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Dysart Unified School District’s Growing Minds Preschool is hosting a parent information night for children ages 2 to 5 at its main campus at 17999 W. Surprise Farms Loop S. from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. Additional meetings will be held at Freedom Traditional Academy at 16066 N. Parkview Place+Marley Park Elementary at 15042 W. Sweetwater Ave.+Mountain View School at 18302 W. Burton Ave. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Seven students from Surprise were named to the dean’s list for the spring term at the University of Maryland Global Campus—Timothy Berger, Francisco Campa, Corey Charbonneau, Nathaniel Krimmel, Shannelle Murry, Bailey Pegg and Wilber Velasco Penate—among nearly 18,000 students who earned the honor by completing at least six credits and keeping a term and cumulative GPA of 3.5. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Surprise picked nine new members for its Youth Council including Mayor Kevin Sartor’s daughter, Kaydence—these students will join next year’s council and meet 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Surprise Independent
- ➤ After a lively July 4 celebration at Community Park, the city held an inspiring start to summer with a range of events planned, including a Back 2 School Community Fair on July 19 at the Surprise Senior Center, a blood drive on July 27 at the Surprise Regional Library, and water workshops beginning July 23. The city will also have a City Council meeting on August 5 at 6 p.m.—Neighborhood Grant applications for $10,000 are due by August 22—and heat relief stations will serve residents through September 30.
