- ➤ Organizations across the Phoenix metro area will hold several free backpack and school supply giveaways to help families prepare for the school year; one event at the Surprise Senior Center on Saturday, July 19 will offer supplies, haircuts + prizes while other programs in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa will provide essential school resources. - ➤ Jimmy John's opened its second sandwich shop in Surprise on July 2 — the branch is the first west of Loop 303, where four Walters family partners cut the ribbon with Vice Mayor Jack Hastings and company officials. The store is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dysart Unified School District has set key dates for the new year with Meet the Teacher for K-8 families on Tuesday, July 29 at 5 p.m.—high school freshman orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30 from 7:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Classes begin on Thursday, July 31 and high school open houses will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Surprise Independent
- ➤ ABC15 Smart Shopper has compiled a list of deals for teachers that offer free or low-cost school supplies, discounted admissions including at Arizona Science Center, and special educator rates at local attractions. Teachers can also take advantage of supply drives like the event on July 16 and APS’s Supply My Class program—offers that help lower back-to-school costs. ABC15
- ➤ School transportation options are being expanded across the Valley as bus driver shortages leave families needing more reliable ways to get to school. Families can now use choices such as Waymo teen accounts (available since July 8), reduced Valley Metro fares, teen Uber services, and other rideshare options to help students travel safely. ABC15

- ➤ Surprise continues its monthly hazardous waste collection program with pickups scheduled from July 14th to 17th. Residents may request an appointment for electronic waste—such as TVs, computers and cell phones—or for other hazardous waste using the My Surprise app or by calling customer service at 623-222-1920. - ➤ The District 3 Newsletter recapped the Independence Day celebration and thanked the Parks - Recreation team while also announcing upcoming events such as water workshops starting July 23, Fire First Friday life-saving classes today, a blood drive on July 27, and community and City Council meetings on August 2 and 5.
