Good morning, Surprise. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ABC15 reporter Nick Ciletti visited the Washington St. shelter where volunteers from St. Vincent de Paul run a pop-up clinic that offers free care for pets and people in need all month long. Laurie Samuels said her chihuahua mix Cupcake is doing better after receiving vaccinations, flea treatments, and medication – the program helps those facing challenging times keep their pets healthy.  ABC15
  • Surprise is providing free hydration and indoor refuge stations at several locations, including all three city libraries, to help residents stay safe as temperatures soar this summer. The stations will run until Sept. 30 — residents can visit the Surprise Resource Center, Hollyhock Library, Surprise Regional Library or Asante Library for a cool break.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two West-MEC students from Surprise received certificates of accomplishment at the national SkillsUSA Championships held in Atlanta last month. Craig Barrett earned a certificate in power equipment technology and Parker Katena in marine service technology — both recognized among over 6,500 competitors.  Surprise Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • An ABC15 investigation found that many extreme heat deaths may have been misclassified in Maricopa County, including a 72-year-old man in Mesa who fell and suffered burns last year but was not counted as a heat death (hidden heat deaths). Community advocate Stacey Champion said officials needed a standardized counting method, while county officials credited declining numbers in 2024 to current policies.  ABC15
  • Dr. Shannon Barker, a Valleywise Health pediatrician, said parents should start easing children into a school routine by adjusting sleep schedules and limiting screen time before school starts by adding a little reading time. She noted that regular check-ups, healthy meals, and up-to-date vaccinations are essential to help prevent a rise in measles cases as fewer kindergartners get vaccinated.  ABC15
  • Benevilla is hosting a free caregiver well-being workshop at the Benevilla Education Center in Sun City West from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 17—led by Gina Alvarez from Billet Health—to help family caregivers, older adults and community members learn practical coping strategies and access local mental health resources.  Surprise Independent
