- ➤ The Asante Library at 16755 W. Vereda Solana Drive in north Surprise will host the Wacky Water Storytime on Friday, July 25. The event will offer a water slide and fun water toys from (10:30 to 11:30 a.m.) and no registration is required. Surprise Independent
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The West Valley Regional Chamber is co-sponsoring a business mixer at Uptown Alley in Surprise on Wednesday, July 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. Business owners who bring a $15 door prize will get 30 seconds of spotlight time+a chance to share their services with peers. Surprise Independent
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A teenager was taken into custody on arson and endangerment charges after intentionally setting his family's home on fire Saturday night near Cotton and Paradise lanes (the fire began at 10:55 p.m. on July 19 and all occupants escaped without injuries). Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At Noah Webster Schools Pima Campus on the Pima reservation, teacher Emmett LaFave is raising funds to build a piano keyboard lab—he plans to provide 30 keyboards for students facing financial barriers and start an after-school piano club. He has reached the halfway point and his efforts promise to expand music education for the students. ABC15
- ➤ James D. Andres from Surprise was part of a three-student team from the University of Scranton that placed first in an international cybercrime capture-the-flag challenge held June 9 — 11 at the University of Leon in Spain. The team was the first from the U.S. to earn this win at the White Hat Conference, which was sponsored by Boston University and Spanish cybersecurity agencies. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Registration for the Surprise Parks and Recreation Department’s Tot Time program opens on Aug. 4 for residents and Aug. 11 for non-residents. The program serves children ages 3 to 5 with activities for kindergarten readiness, runs from Sept. 2 to May 14 at Sierra Montana Recreation Center and Countryside Recreation Center from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and charges a weekly fee plus a one-time registration fee—space is limited. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On July 16, a group attended a public meeting with the federal monitor and Sheriff Sheridan to demand an end to federal oversight of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. They said the office met 12 of 13 benchmarks and argued that a 17-second longer encounter with Hispanic individuals is a reasonable difference + they urged officials to cut the costly oversight. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Maricopa County health officials confirmed the first West Nile virus death of the season today in an older adult with underlying health conditions. They reported 17 cases so far and urge residents to use insect repellent+ remove standing water to lessen mosquito bites. ABC15
