- ➤ Almost 20 years ago, Pastor John R. Powell spotted a building with a 'For Rent' sign while on a delivery route in Surprise and transformed the abandoned structure into Gideon Missionary Baptist Church. Today, the white church at 12763 N. Grand Avenue — between Dysart and Greenway roads and visible from US 60 through gaps in tree-lined train tracks — serves a growing congregation. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Conscious Creations Art Studio will host a Summer Sip and Shop Social on Friday, Aug. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at 16551 N. Dysart Road+ the event will let community members meet five local artists and shop for unique art materials. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A retired lawyer responded to Lisa Everett’s letter by urging federal authorities to end MCSO monitoring, which he said has been mismanaged since 2014. He noted that after moving to Arizona in 2013 he witnessed self-serving practices and offered his help for nearly seven years but was turned down—calling on local leaders to form an effective solution.
