- ➤ Surprise is seeking sponsors for the Surprise Area Interfaith and Golden Rule Community Breakfast on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Dysart Schools District Office (event food begins at 8 a.m. and the program at 8:30 a.m.), with sponsorship amounts ranging from $500 to $3,000 available through Friday, Aug. 22. - ➤ Residents in the northwest Valley near Grand Avenue are concerned about rapid development affecting senior communities and new homes in the Asante area. They worry that increased truck traffic, more trains, and cargo hauls will change the area's natural beauty and quiet life. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Canyon Ridge School Principal Jill Hoppe earned the Exemplary Principal Award from County School Superintendent Shelli Boggs during a July 28 staff meeting—she has led the A-rated school in Surprise for nine years and brings 28 years of education experience. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Fifty-six Riverview Elementary teachers got a surprise shopping spree at an Office Depot OfficeMax store in Surprise on July 30 when a $20,000 donation through Office Depot’s Start Proud! program—coordinated by the Dysart Education Foundation and Domtar Paper was given to buy supplies. The supplies will help them get ready for the new school year. Surprise Independent
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Residents say the summer feels cooler than in past years, but data shows it is tied for the seventh warmest and ranked 12th for high temperatures. An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect — several hiking trails are closed during peak hours to keep people safe. ABC15
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Surprise’s monthly household hazardous waste collection program will pick up electronic and other hazardous waste from Aug. 11 to 14. Residents can schedule an appointment using the My Surprise app or by calling customer service at 623-222-1920; pickups are available on a first come first served basis. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The Arizona Department of Transportation selected 155th Avenue in northwest Surprise for a new Loop 303 interchange to ease traffic on U.S. 60—final design will begin early 2026 and construction will start late 2028. Surprise Independent
