COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Almost 20 years ago, Rev. John R. Powell found a for‐rent building while on a delivery route in Surprise and built Gideon Missionary Baptist Church there. The church is now at 12763 N. Grand Ave.—its painted white exterior with large black lettering can be seen from U.S. 60.  Surprise Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • ALDI Grocery Store, a top requested store in Surprise, opened on July 24 at 13723 W. Bell Road with a ribbon cutting—Store General Manager Nil Allen, Mayor Kevin Sartor, ALDI District Manager Mei Wu, Police Chief Evan Becher and Surprise Fire-Medical representatives attended.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two outside organizations have given grants to keep Surprise assistance programs running for low-income, older residents and people with disabilities. The Utility Assistance Program at the Surprise Resource Center will receive $29,100—while the Senior Center's meal program gets $92,000 as the city council is expected to approve a $9,200 match today.  Surprise Independent
  • Arizona officials did not answer questions about a study of Maricopa County's death penalty cases — the study found that only 13% of cases ended with a death sentence and cost taxpayers at least $305 million. State Representative Patty Contreras said some people still support the death penalty despite the hidden and costly process.  ABC15

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sun Health will host its LiveWell Conference at Midwestern University in Glendale November 13—14, where experts like Arthur C. Brooks and Maddy Dychtwald will share science-backed advice on aging well. Tickets are available with early bird pricing until Aug. 31—residents can choose between general admission or a VIP Experience Pass.  Surprise Independent
  • An Arizona dentist launched Tapestry of Africa—a travel company where safari trips fund dental and medical care for patients in East Africa—and his new venture combines adventure tourism with a mission to provide sustainable, life-saving care. The innovative model will organize more trips in the coming months to help reach more people in need.  ABC15
