BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Dentists of Surprise held a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 30 for their new office at 16853 N. 145th Ave, Suite 173 near the southwest corner of Bell and 144th Avenue. Mayor Kevin Sartor and Drs. Enoch Wiesner and Ruben Valencia welcomed the event — the dental office now offers services on weekdays. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A local resident from Surprise joined other community members to oppose a BNSF Railway intermodal facility project due to concerns about public safety, heavy truck traffic and the loss of rural character — urging BNSF and county supervisors to consider alternatives that protect local lifestyles. - ➤ Ryan and Melissa Langohr said cars veered off North Sarival Road into their backyard 18 times since 2002 before Jersey barriers were installed in 2025. They claim the city's long delay in repairing the dangerous road is gross negligence — raising questions about which agency will address such risks sooner. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Evan Becher has served as Surprise’s police chief since early June and was sworn in on Aug. 5 at the city council meeting after the summer break. City Manager Bob Wingenroth said the ceremony marked a leadership transition built on respect—collaboration and public service. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The Surprise Planning and Zoning Commission named Ken Chapman as its new chair on July 17 and appointed Commissioner Anthony Spata as vice chair by unanimous vote. The Surprise Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission made similar leadership changes on July 30 when Crystal Kupper advanced to chair and Hassan Rasul became vice chair (both groups will continue meeting at City Hall). - ➤ Today, the Surprise Planning and Zoning Commission will review a proposal from Take 5 Oil Change to build a new auto oil change facility west of Loop 303 and south of Bell Road at Villages at Surprise South at City Hall at 6 p.m. The proposed facility will occupy a 1.34-acre site with a 1,708-square-foot building featuring three service stalls, six parking spaces (including one ADA space) and drought-tolerant landscaping. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Arizona joined a multistate group called ArrayRX to lower drug prices by up to 80% after Governor Katie Hobbs signed an executive order on Wednesday, introducing a free discount card (for FDA-approved drugs) to help the underinsured. The program will let Arizonans compare prices and benefit from pooled purchasing (with states like Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Connecticut, and Ohio) without costing taxpayers extra. ABC15
