COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The city of Surprise is recruiting sixth- through 12th-grade students to join the Youth Justice Project that gives youth a chance to help juvenile offenders repair harm by serving in Teen Court. The program begins Monday, August 25 and runs through April 2026—applications are due by Wednesday, August 20—and accepted members will be notified by Friday, August 22. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kevin McMurdie—of Surprise—earned a master’s degree in cybersecurity from Georgia Tech in Atlanta and was one of 6,660 students who received degrees at the institute’s 268th Commencement exercises held in May. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At the Aug. 5 city council meeting, a Surprise man asked to run a wholesale tequila business from his home garage, and his request sparked a debate on whether to allow home liquor sales—his permit was denied, though officials did not rule out similar ideas in the future. Surprise Independent
