- ➤ A monsoon storm with probable microbursts uprooted many trees and snapped mature ones at the Sun Village community at 14300 W. Bell Road on Thursday night. Workers began cutting down the fallen trees Friday morning—clearance work continues in affected areas. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Family and friends of Kiethsa Sasser gathered outside Estrella Jail on Thursday night to release balloons marking the anniversary of her overdose death on August 14—all while urging the sheriff’s office to act after 43 suspected overdoses were reported at the jail this year. ABC15
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Every summer, the Southwest Kids Cancer Foundation runs Camp Sunrise for children who beat cancer and Camp Sidekicks for their siblings in Payson. The camps give kids fun activities like jello wars and outdoor games—helping them feel safe and cared for. ABC15
- ➤ Fellowship Square assisted living in Surprise has installed the Paul motion detector created by a Swiss firm to help seniors stay safe by tracking movement and spotting fall risks — the device looks like a smoke detector and updates staff immediately with a digital dashboard. Residents like Marlene Caffee say the new system gives them peace of mind by alerting help when needed. Surprise Independent
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Surprise Parks and Recreation Department has opened fall adult team sports registration for softball, kickball, volleyball, basketball and flag football, with games starting in September and October at local parks and recreation centers. Registration is available online, by phone at 623-222-2000, or in person at the office on N. Bullard Ave — teams must meet minimum player requirements. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Paradise Honors enters the season with new coach Josh SeKoch, who replaces former coach Josh Goodloe and takes over a team that reached the 3A title game in 2023 and quarterfinals in 2024—players now ready for a shift from an Air Raid style to a more balanced defense.
