- ➤ Eligible neighborhoods in Surprise may apply for small grants to support local events and improvements, with applications due by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 — projects must be finished by June 2026. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Surprise teens will join a dodgeball tournament on Friday, Aug. 22 at Countryside Recreation Center—from 5 to 9 p.m. The event, open to ages 12 to 17 and allowing friends to join the same team with up to six players, requires online registration or a call to 623-222-2600. Surprise Independent
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Surprise resident James Hersch will perform a free concert for neighbors at Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church in The Grand at 6:30 p.m. on September 21—tickets are required for entry even though the event is free. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new state board will recommend standards for treating and supervising sex offenders with 27—33 members appointed from state agencies and courts. Funding for the board's two staff members starts Sept. 26 and lawmakers will soon review its proposals in the next session. ABC15
- ➤ Crews in Peoria have begun installing new traffic signal infrastructure—adding a north-to-west left-turn lane at Happy Valley Road and Vistancia Boulevard—to help ease congestion in northwest Surprise. The work is part of a broader plan to provide more route options for residents in the Asante and Desert Oasis areas while imposing temporary restrictions. Surprise Independent
