- ➤ On Aug. 20, the Independent Newsmedia Senior Expo at The Colonnade in Surprise brought local businesses and seniors together at a senior living community to highlight services like insurance, home remodeling, health care, and musical theater. Apex Windows and Bath used a Star Wars hologram display—demonstrating a creative approach to reaching seniors. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The Colonnade Employee Scholarship Committee will host a craft fair — with a silent auction that offers baskets of meat, cheese, wine and other gifts and crafts made by residents — on Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Colonnade on N. Colonnade Way; all money raised will help fund scholarships for employee education. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Flor Dominguez, a Surprise fourth-grade teacher at Countryside Elementary School, was honored as one of five winners of the Four Peaks for Teachers campaign — she earned $1,000 to purchase supplies for her classroom. Surprise Independent
