- ➤ Surprise city officials helped local restaurant Jim's Burgers & Eggs mark the one-year anniversary of its new ownership on Aug. 14. The Economic Development Department congratulated Albert Carreon, and the restaurant at 17019 W. Greenway Road has served customers for nearly two decades. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Imagine Prep Surprise, a charter school for grades 6 through 12, was honored by Character.org — a national nonprofit promoting ethical values — for its Promising Practice program that featured quarterly House Party Days to build character among students and staff. Teachers led these events to help students build community and learn important social-emotional skills. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to postpone land use amendment decisions for the BNSF plan to build an intermodal hub in Wittmann—located north of U.S. 60 between 211th and 235th avenues—and rescheduled the amendment meeting to Nov. 5 so that opponents have more time to organize. - ➤ The city of Surprise is hosting a public auction where items such as vehicles, equipment and furniture will be available for bidding until 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1+ buyers must pick up their purchases by appointment within five days after the auction. Surprise Independent

- ➤ ALA-West Foothills is set to compete in the 4A Conference with nearly the same players from last year’s 3A title game — Coach Chad Mitton stepped down last July to focus on his business, prompting his son Hudson to transfer to Mesa and junior wide receiver Amr Hassan to move to Canyon View while other players and coaches remained.
