- ➤ A New Leaf will hold its annual Fill the Truck donation drive in Surprise on Friday, Oct. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Riverboat Bingo (18300 W. Bell Road). Local residents will drop off household goods like linens, towels, and pillows to support families facing housing challenges while enjoying free food and entertainment. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Former Surprise councilmember Aly Cline and her husband Gary will be honored with Community Legend awards during the Surprise Area Interfaith and Golden Rule Breakfast on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 8 a.m.—they join artist Connie Whitlock, youth leader Lela Sky West, and nonprofit A New Leaf in receiving the honor. - ➤ Six winning Powerball tickets from the last two drawings were sold in the Valley—three in Surprise, with winners at Walmart, Bashas’, and Fry’s Marketplace on Aug. 30 and Sept. 1. Lottery officials said the jackpot is estimated at $1.3 billion for today's drawing. Surprise Independent

- ➤ DCS Director Kathryn Ptak said her agency started internal reviews after the deaths of Rebekah Baptiste, Emily Pike and Zariah Dodd to find out what went wrong in the cases. Lawmakers will meet in a closed session today to discuss possible changes—new laws or policy updates—to help keep children safe. ABC15
- ➤ A Valley family and their attorney claim that ICE should release their loved one because he was granted special cancellation of removal in Phoenix in 2022 but his case remains pending—he was recently detained for new removal proceedings, which has left his legal status in question. ABC15

- ➤ Local girls volleyball teams began their season Aug. 27 as coaches from Estrella Foothills, Millennium, Paradise Honors, Shadow Ridge, and Willow Canyon shared key details about returning stars & new players and set goals to win region titles and advance in playoffs.
