- ➤ The Surprise Public Library System is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month by inviting residents to get a library card online and letting kids who sign up in September receive a free magnetic bookmark—three library locations offer books, free programs, job resources and more. - ➤ The new Oasis Swim Center in west Surprise has cut the wait list for swim lessons from nearly 3,800 kids to a few hundred. The 19-acre pool complex at 12361 N. Perryville Road offers multiple slides for all ages—showing the city’s effort to ease access to swim lessons. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Venetian Nail Lounge opened on Elm Street in Surprise City Center to offer manicures and pedicures—co-owners Danny and Phuong Phan celebrated the ribbon cutting with Mayor Kevin Sartor and Councilmember Earle Greenberg on Aug. 27, and the salon now operates weekdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Surprise Independent
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ West Valley Chorale announced its Sixth Annual Young Singers Competition with cash prizes up to $2,000 for Valley-area high school juniors and seniors. Applications will be accepted until Saturday, Sept. 13 and semifinalists will sing in the finals on Monday, Oct. 27 at Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church in Sun City West—offering a professional accompanist.
