EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The city of Surprise is hosting a workshop — More Than Monarchs — at the Surprise Water Education Center (16126 N. Civic Center Plaza) on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. where participants will learn to build a garden that attracts butterflies and other pollinators. Surprise Independent
- ➤ DUSD Superintendent John Croteau informed Surprise voters about an upcoming bond and override election aimed at funding urgent repairs, maintenance and construction for the aging school district — a measure voters have rejected in previous attempts since 2006. Mail-in ballots will be delivered soon to decide the proposal. Surprise Independent
- ➤ Seth Pedraza from Surprise was named to Bismarck State College’s president’s honor roll for the summer semester after earning a 3.50 GPA—he qualified by taking 12 semester hours. Interim college president Dan Leingang said the honor roll recognizes students who exceeded academic expectations. Surprise Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Records show that since 2018 an average of 20 children died yearly while in DCS care with reports of 14 deaths in 2024 and 19 in 2023—cases include a 16-year-old shot in Phoenix and two children who died from not getting enough insulin. DCS has started a review to learn what went wrong and try to stop more tragedies. ABC15
