- ➤ Surprise lowered the initial business license fee from $168 to $84 on Sept. 16 to help new businesses start up. Councilmember Nick Haney led the debate and Vice Mayor Jack Hastings said the fee cut shows the city is open for business — supporting local startups. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Surprise councilmember Johnny V. Melton supports a modest bond proposal in Dysart that will fund chillers, school buses & campus safety improvements without raising taxes, saying it will help maintain school quality and safe transportation routes. Surprise Independent
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ High school swimming and diving teams began their season on Sept. 2 in Surprise as local coaches from Paradise Honors Panthers and Willow Canyon Wildcats shared plans and support for their swimmers. The coaches emphasized teamwork and improvements as returning champions and new racers aim to reduce times — key swimmers are set for strong performances at upcoming meets. Surprise Independent
