ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local brewery OHSO Breweries and Distillery reported higher costs for beer packaging materials because tariffs raised prices for plastic, aluminum and stainless steel, with operator John Goodstein noting production delays that hurt small businesses. Attorney General Kris Mayes addressed these concerns at a roundtable Thursday—she said the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the tariff arguments in early November.  ABC15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Imagine Prep Surprise teachers were awarded $500 grants on Sept. 23 by APS representatives from Palo Verde Generating station through the APS Supply My Classroom program. Cervantes planned to use her funds for classroom supplies—pencils, markers, glue sticks, and cleaner—while Spalding and Ninteman planned to buy athletic equipment and update classroom decor.  Surprise Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Surprise will hold its monthly hazardous waste collection from Oct. 13 to Oct. 16 with separate pickups for electronic items and other hazardous materials. Residents can schedule a pickup via the My Surprise app+ or by calling customer service at 623-222-1920 based on first-come, first-served availability.  Surprise Independent

  • Food banks are preparing for an increase in clients as the government shutdown enters day two and many federal workers face furlough—raising concerns about meeting the needs of the 718,000 people served monthly.   • A new water year began October 1, and seven western states must reach a deal by February 14 to share the Colorado River; Acting Commissioner David Palumbo leads negotiations after a key nomination was pulled—raising worries for Arizona’s water supply.  ABC15
