COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rotary Club of Surprise and Sun City West will host the 17th annual 'Fore the Kids' golf scramble at Briarwood Country Club on Dec. 6 — golfers will check in at 8 a.m. and start play at 9 a.m. Early bird registration is due by Oct. 15 and profits will support scholarships, youth leadership programs and local schools.  Surprise Independent
  • Surprise will host a day of service on Nov. 15 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Community Room at City Hall—volunteers will assemble care bags, hygiene kits, Christmas packages and decorative cards to support deployed service members and at-risk veterans. A donation drive runs from Nov. 1 to Nov. 14 at four locations—items such as puzzle books, body wash and sunscreen are needed.  Surprise Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Takanock—a two-year-old Michigan-based company—is planning to build a new data center with on-site natural gas generators at Bullard and Olive avenues, a half-mile south of Surprise near Luke Air Force Base. Several residents have voiced concerns about the project to the Surprise City Council.  Surprise Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arizona Commission on the Arts awarded Surprise a $14,000 grant to support professional development workshops by Capably and to fund student art sculptures for the new Roots of Creation event — planned for Jan. 24 — as part of 375 awards statewide.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona Charter Academy has added three new afterschool clubs for middle school students to join in dance, gaming and role-playing. The Hip-Hop Club meets three days a week from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.—teacher Jada Henderson said the club was inspired by her own school days while science teacher Arien Ragsdale now leads the Esports and Dungeons and Dragons Clubs.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Surprise residents can give feedback on plans to build a senior living facility on a five acre part of the St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church campus at the corner of Bell Road and Cotton Lane. Kelly Hall will host a meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 in the Modular Social Hall at 17111 W. Bell Road—call 6232223011 for details.  Surprise Independent
