COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Surprise District 5's October newsletter details many autumn events, including the first Desert Fall Festival and Fiesta Grande on Oct 11 at Mark Coronado Park, where authentic food, music, and family fun will be offered + additional events such as Monster Bash on Oct 24, council meetings on Oct 7 and 21, G.A.I.N. Night, Fall Break Camp, and a library reading program. Residents are invited to join these activities as the city gears up for a busy season of community celebrations.  Surprise Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Designer Shoe Warehouse opened in the Prasada shopping area on Oct. 3 after a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 14045 N. Prasada Parkway—local officials including Councilmember Johnny V. Melton and Economic Development Director Jeanine Jerkovic led the event as shoppers enjoyed DJ music, face painting, and giveaways in a pre-launch celebration before the official opening the next day.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brian Yoder—student broadcasting leader in the district—received a Special Commendation Award from the Arizona Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association on Sept. 8 for leading DSB Live as his students captured live sports events and provided key audio and video support.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maricopa County mailed ballots today that ask voters to decide on Proposition 409 — a measure proposing an $898 million upgrade to health services including a 200-bed behavioral hospital. The proposal may raise property taxes by about 11 cents per $100 — a concern raised by local leaders about its impact on families struggling financially.  ABC15
  • ADOT will restripe westbound U.S. 60 into three continuous lanes approaching Loop 303—this move comes after Councilmember Nick Haney received feedback from residents worried about merge issues. Haney later emailed his constituents to share details of the revised plan.  Surprise Independent
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation asks residents to review and comment on a plan to extend and widen El Mirage Road between Loop 303 and Jomax Road — the project adds new crossings and signalized intersections. Residents can share feedback in a virtual hearing at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and through Oct. 24.  Surprise Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tomorrow the top prospects from the Royals — Rangers — Guardians — Brewers and Phillies will compete at Surprise Stadium for the Arizona Fall League as the hometown Surprise Saguaros host the Glendale Desert Dogs at 6:30 p.m. Mayor Kevin Sartor will throw out the ceremonial first pitch to mark the start of the season.  Surprise Independent
  • Juniors are set to compete in one of the nation's top high school baseball showcases in the Arizona Fall Classic wood bat series at the Surprise Stadium Complex — located at 15930 N. Bullard Ave. Future events include the Arizona Freshman Fall Classic from Oct. 10 to 12 and the Easton Fall Classic from Oct. 17 to 19.  Surprise Independent
