COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Surprise residents will join the national Wear Purple Day on Oct. 16 as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month after Mayor Kevin Sartor proclaimed it on Oct. 7. City Hall and the Public Safety Building will light purple each evening in October+ residents can donate supplies through Oct. 23+ while the Surprise Resource Center displays artwork by survivors. - ➤ Surprise has partnered with C.A.M.P. of Desert Farms2Tables to offer the monthly Pre-Pack 2 Go service on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Surprise Senior Center where residents can reserve produce boxes with a $16 donation from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.—boxes are also available on a first-come, first-served basis. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The WHAM Art Center has launched a monthly Authors’ Circle that lets authors, aspiring writers, and community members aged 16 and older share their work and get feedback. The group meets every third Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. — at 16560 N. Dysart Road with a suggested donation of $10 to offset costs. Surprise Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 23 high school students from Dysart Unified were chosen for the Arizona All-State Show Choir after auditions on Sept. 20 — they will attend a three-day festival in November to learn performance songs and choreography. Surprise Independent
- ➤ After an ABC15 investigation, state Representative Matt Gress said he will drop a bill in January to require public access to school superintendent pay details. His proposal comes after the investigation found that many superintendents earned extra perks along with their base salaries—raising transparency concerns. ABC15
