Good morning, Surprise. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 17th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maricopa County said heavy rains from Hurricane Priscilla's remnants washed out a 70-year-old bridge on Beverly Road east of 133rd Avenue—leaving a small West Valley community with only one access route to services—and residents are now calling on county officials for temporary repairs to restore emergency access and daily travel. County representatives are reviewing the situation while locals worry about delays for school buses and medical trips.  ABC15
  • Rev. William “Chico” Higgins Jr., a Chicago native and longtime resident of Surprise, will celebrate his 90th birthday on Saturday, Oct. 25 at The Grand—he also recently learned via Ancestry.com that he unexpectedly became a father at 89 following a youthful period of partying during his National Guard service.  Surprise Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local retailers in Surprise are offering affordable Halloween deals as families look for ways to enjoy the holiday without high costs. Walmart, WinCo, and Target plan to keep prices low with costumes starting at $10 — candy prices remain steady — to help make Halloween fun and affordable.  ABC15

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight Surprise students earned dean’s list honors at University of Maryland Global Campus for the summer term after completing at least six credits with a term GPA of 3.5 and a cumulative GPA of 3.5; the students include Clareth Castro, Shalyn Currie, Logan Kohler, Nathaniel Krimmel, Shannelle Murry, Arthur Ofalia, Wilber Velasco Penate (and) Zachariah Venn among more than 11,500 dean’s list honorees.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Katie Hobbs announced changes to how the Division of Developmental Disabilities assesses children that would have cut key services but are now paused—allowing extra review for those needing extraordinary care. The revisions come as the department faces a budget shortfall and follow strong pushback from advocates who deemed the cuts catastrophic.  ABC15
  • Mary Jane Ziola, a member of the DUSD Governing Board, supports the bond measure because it does not raise the tax rate and will fund a new school, secure land for a future high school, and upgrade outdated buses and security systems — all meant to protect taxpayer investment in local education. She urged voters in Surprise to back this disciplined, fiscally responsible move.  Surprise Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • CenterWell Senior Primary Care opened its new office on Oct. 8 at 14273 W. Grand Ave., Suite 100 — Market President Daryle Young and Councilmember Johnny V. Melton led the event for Surprise seniors. The opening featured doctors, a nurse and outreach from groups including Aetna and Humana while Bahama Buck’s provided treats.  Surprise Independent
