- ➤ The city of Surprise is hosting Open Rec at Sierra Montana Recreation Center (14861 N. Spring Lane) from 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct 27 for kids in 5th through 8th grades to play games, complete a craft and enjoy a remodeled Teen Lounge with new arcade and video games. The program will also be held on Nov 3, Nov 10, Nov 17, Dec 1, Dec 8 and Dec 15, and participants must pre-register online with cash-only concessions available. Surprise Independent
- ➤ The city of Surprise awarded two neighborhood groups $5,000 each from the Neighborhood Grant Program to support events at Homestead at Marley Park and Royal Ranch. Councilmembers Chris Judd, Nick Haney, and Patrick Duffy approved the grants earlier this month — the funds are available now and must be spent by June 15. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Local families in Asante are upset because the school district did not keep its promise of a nearby school—many children now face long bus rides to faraway classes. The letter urges the Dysart Unified School District and city officials to plan a better option that avoids turning Asante into a K—3 school if the bond does not pass. Surprise Independent
