COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Surprise Veterans Day parade is prompting road closures on Bullard Avenue from Bell Road to Tierra Buena Lane, Buck O’Neil Way from Paradise Lane to Bullard Avenue, and a local traffic restriction on Paradise Lane, with closures from 11:59 p.m. Monday until 5 p.m. today. The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Bullard and is followed by family activities at Surprise Community Park from noon to 3 p.m.—motorists should use alternate routes—to avoid delays.  Surprise Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • The West Valley Symphony will open its 57th season on Saturday, Nov. 15 in Surprise with new Music Director Daniel Wiley leading the Nordic-inspired program called Fire and Fjord at The Vista Center for the Arts—doors open at 2 p.m. and the show starts at 3 p.m.  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Dysart Unified School District will begin accepting open enrollment applications for the 2026-2027 school year on Wednesday, Nov. 12 — parents can apply for elementary schools, middle schools, Freedom Traditional Academy and high schools, and the priority period ends on Jan. 4 with continuing monthly reviews as space allows.  Surprise Independent
  • Voters in Dysart Unified School District rejected the bond measure on Nov. 4 but approved a budget override to keep key staff and programs running. The district will pause major capital projects while the override supports operations for several more years—ensuring continued educational services.  Surprise Independent
  • The Arizona Department of Education said 1,055 teachers resigned since July 1 and more than 4,200 teaching jobs remain open—most are filled by substitutes or part-time staff. Several districts, including Dysart Unified, are expanding their teacher training programs—efforts that will help ease the shortage in the coming months.  ABC15

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in the Northwest Valley opposed plans for a new BNSF rail facility by attending meetings and signing letters, and their input led the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to vote unanimously against another delay and an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan. Supervisor Debbie Lesko studied the issue and met with residents—steps that support ongoing local efforts to protect their communities.  Surprise Independent
