COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Surprise SciTech Festival will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Surprise Recreation Campus located at 15960 N. Bullard Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—it will offer over 100 interactive STEAM booths with live science shows, robotics scrimmages and space exploration demos. Road closures on Bullard Avenue, Buck O’Neil Way and Fastball Drive will begin Friday to keep pedestrians and drivers safe.  Surprise Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Valley retailers are offering Thanksgiving meal deals for as little as $4 per person with discounts on turkeys, sides and pies at stores like Fry’s, Walmart, Aldi, Sam’s Club and WinCo. Surprise shoppers can take advantage of these offers to plan an affordable holiday meal — saving money without the stress of overspending.  ABC15
  • Kristi May, a Surprise veteran and businesswoman, founded Legend Acres and uses her military training to serve the community in a new way—she recounted her journey for Women’s Entrepreneurship Day on November 19 and earned recognition as Arizona Vetrepreneur of the Year.  Surprise Independent

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Arizona Association for Economic Development honored the Surprise Economic Development Department with three Golden Prospector Awards at the AAED Fall Forum in Prescott. Director Jeanine Jerkovic said the awards recognize the team's creative work (including a humorous April Fool’s marketing brochure and a playful Mission: Cheesecake video meant to attract a key restaurant).  Surprise Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Valley Vista High School was named a Purple Star School for its strong support of military families and held a ceremony with students, parents & staff on Nov. 17. It is the third Purple Star school in the district and will hold quarterly meet and greet events as well as a Month of the Military Child celebration in April.  Surprise Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leslie and Cosmin from the Maricopa County Recorder's office will return to help participants sign up for Title Fraud Protection on the computer — participation is limited to eight.  Surprise Independent
  • Surprise City Council approved $120,000 on Nov. 18 for promotions and communications for events celebrating America's 250th birthday—funding that covers event planning and programming through next year's July 4 celebration. Parks and Recreation Director Holly Osborn said a planned fireworks show will be the city's largest ever—adding that officials expect the boost in funding to increase public participation.  Surprise Independent
